This week I’ve been focused on what success looks like for different people, and why we make the decisions that we do. I’ve been reflecting on how our values drive our decisions and how that impacts our businesses. What gives you a sense that you are achieving, making progress and that your decisions are right?

Straight roads do not make skillful drivers.” Paulo Coelho

How many decisions are you making every day and what’s driving those decisions?

The number of decisions we have to make every day can exhaust us and reduce our ability to be flexible. Research into how we make decisions has found that the quality of our decisions erodes throughout the day. Apparently, we have a fixed amount of willpower which can get used up – meaning that our decision-making power is a depletable resource. Just as many of us will succumb to chocolate or crisps after a day full of mentally exhausting healthy decisions, or snap at loved ones at the end of a long and tiring meeting, we’re more likely to make bad or hasty management decisions after a day full of hundreds of trivial judgements.

The research shows that the more decisions we have to make, the more mentally tired we’ll become until our brains start looking for shortcuts. We either act impulsively or become paralysed with indecision. The impact on our businesses when this happens can be profound. The flexibility and resilience of your people and your organisation will be affected if you’re mentally fatigued.

Entrepreneurs are famous for going with their gut, and it usually serves them well. But when we become overwhelmed and ‘stuck’, we can start second-guessing ourselves, which usually means that decisions are harder to make.

Self-belief can make you more resilient, but sometimes you don’t know how you’re going to react until you’re in the situation. Making a decision and moving forward, even if it means that mistakes happen, is usually better than feeling paralysed with indecision.

In Chapter Four of my book ‘The REAL Entrepreneur: how to simplify, grow and enjoy your business’, I talk about decision fatigue and how to combat it.

Here are a few options:-

🌟 Simplify your life to make it as easy as possible to make good decisions
🌟 Plan daily decisions the night before
🌟 Remove the decision by adding to your calendar
🌟 Separate the deciding from the doing
🌟 Do the most important things first
🌟 Eat well before important decisions but not too much!
🌟 Trust your gut and just do it!

It’s completely unrealistic to expect yourself to know everything or be able to do everything. If you’d like to talk through the choices you’re currently facing or the current obstacle in your business, let me know. And please be kind to yourself…
