This week I’ve been recharging my batteries by indulging my passion for scuba diving and reflecting on the year that’s almost over. Although in many ways today is just another day, it’s also a chance to reflect on another cycle around the sun. What did you learn from this past year? What has served you well and what has blocked your progress? What will you keep and what will you leave behind? Whether you’re just launching a new business, thinking about starting or in a growth phase, giving yourself the time and space to reflect and learn is important. Let’s focus on building a business and a life that works for you.

Live to learn and you will really learn to live.” John C. Maxwell

Happy New Year’s Eve!

I hope you enjoyed the festive season and managed to pause to reflect and recharge as well as spending time with your loved ones.

This is a good time of year to look back at what you’ve learned and achieved and what you can take into the new year. It’s not just the big events or milestones that matter but the small pieces of evidence that show up to help us know we’re on the right track. Without pausing to notice, we risk missing the clues that help give us the confidence and strength to walk along our chosen path. For me it’s been a challenging but exhilarating year, marked by uncertainty as well as business and personal growth. Here’s what I learned from 2021:-

🌟 Health is everything. After many years of ignoring what my body was telling me, I’m finally understanding that my mental and physical health are vital. Without my health I have nothing. Health ‘slots’ go into my calendar before anything else and are non-negotiable.

🌟 Practice what you preach. In the first few years of my coaching practice, I kept my own life, my successes and my failures quite separate from my work. This year I began to share more of my story and there’s more to come. I’m all about helping you build a business and a life that works for you, and I’m starting to understand the importance of showing you what that looks and feels like for me.

🌟 Keep giving back. People are often surprised, and sometimes even suspicious, that I continue to run a free community for business owners and offer free Clarity Calls to all members – no strings attached. The truth is that I learn so much from every conversation I have. I know how frustrating it can be to feel stuck, and helping others get unstuck is the best feeling in the world.

🌟 The power of the people we know. Opportunities, connections and new clients have all come from my network this year. People getting in contact to offer insights and ideas, existing clients putting me in touch with others they know I can help. I value you all and welcome your inputs and referrals.

🌟 Fortune favours the brave. I’ve always known I wanted to be able to run multiple businesses from wherever I am in the world, but it’s never been particularly clear to me how to get there. One year ago, almost on a whim, we sold our home, uprooted ourselves from family and friends and moved overseas. With no clear plan, it was a risky thing to do at any time, let alone during a global pandemic. My coaching business has had its most successful year and the opportunities for next year are many. I’m learning to trust myself more and reaping the benefits.

🌟 Consistency leads to success. It’s so important to keep showing up. Even when you’re having a tough time or life isn’t going the way you want. This year I’ve focused on daily LinkedIn posts, this weekly email and my Facebook LIVEs. At least once a week I get a message from someone I haven’t heard from in a while or someone new. They tell me what they’ve learned or appreciated from my insights. They tell me the difference that it’s made in their lives and in their businesses. This is why I do what I do. You don’t get to decide what others find valuable. Keep showing up and doing the work.

🌟 Get clear and specific about what you want. I’ve never been very good at setting specific goals. Some people know exactly what they want but struggle to break it down into manageable chunks. I’m exactly the opposite. Making things happen is what I’m all about, it’s knowing what I want that I find tough! In April I decided to write a second book. I was crystal clear on who I was writing for and what I was sharing with them. I made a plan and got it done. ‘The Business of Freedom: How to escape employment and build a business that works for you’ will be published in January.

🌟 Cherish those you love. The hardest thing about this year has been not seeing the people I love. Zoom definitely helps, but I miss being face to face with the most important people in my life. Never underestimate the value of a good, long hug.

🌟 Honesty. This is the life that I’ve chosen. The flexibility and freedom I want and need has implications for the type of businesses that I build. My decision. My choice. I’m learning every day. Life is a journey and facing my fears makes me stronger.

🌟 Gratitude. I’m so fortunate to be living this life. Despite the many challenges we’ve faced this year, I am grateful to be here. In this place, at this time. I’m grateful to you for reading, for listening and for asking me for support when you need it. I’m grateful that you put your faith in me and I will not let you down.

It’s completely unrealistic to expect yourself to know everything or be able to do everything. Please be kind to yourself and if you’d like to talk through the choices you’re facing or any blockers in your business, let me know.
